Studio in Studio

Hosted within the MA Design studio at HDK Valand, Studio in Studio is a lecture series with designers and makers Zooming in from their studios. During the lectures, practitioners are asked to introduce their studio environment and to discuss how their studio supports and effects their practice. Instead of the standard Zoom/PowerPoint screen presentation, practitioners are instructed to be located within their studio and use whatever is at hand to describe their practice and working environment. Practitioners are also encouraged to use their mobile phones allowing them to walk freely within their studios and to zoom in and out of material and spatial details. Each lecture is structured to a practitioner’s introduction, a studio walk through and moderated discussion with the organisers and audience. On the other side of the window, students are asked to reconfigure part of their own studio environment to host the visiting practitioner, providing a view into the educational studio on the other side. To date we have opened Studio in Studio to students and staff from HDK-Valand Campus Steneby in Dalsland and the Design Ecologies and Visual Communications Masters Programmes at Konstfack, University of Arts, Craft and Design in Stockholm. Each poster is annotated with ‘Strictly no PowerPoint Presentations’ disclaimer. Studio in Studio not only acts as a portal into a practitioner’s place of work but a format for understanding why the design studio still holds a central role in how both design education and practice is conducted.

Studio in Studio is developed, organised and hosted by Onkar Kular as part of the MFA Design Professional Practice module.
